5 Viral Videos Hoaxes That Fooled Most of Us

When a video goes viral on the Internet, a special kind of magic happens. First, the fateful moment needs to be caught on tape. Then, the person or people in it have to realize what they have and upload it onto the World Wide Web for everyone to see. And finally, against all odds, that video has to rise to the top of the millions upon millions of videos already uploaded, and people have to like it enough to start passing it around. When everything comes together though, it’s perfection. You get video classics that stick with you forever (or at least for a week or so) and quotes like “Charlie Bit Me” and “Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That” become part of the popular lexicon.

But sometimes, the magic is nothing more than an illusion, and some of the most classic viral videos ever turn out to be nothing more than an elaborate hoax.

5 Cat Girl

Oh Debbie, how we love you. Yes, Debbie the teary-eyed, cat-loving eHarmony client was faking it, but that doesn’t make her video any less hilarious. The girl in the video seems coy, genuine and honest, then suddenly and seemingly accidentally, reveals her very unhealthy love of cats. And boy did it work. In fact, the video was SO genius that it created a huge argument over whether it was fake or real, even though eHarmony doesn’t even use a video profile feature.

4 Eagle Hunts Baby

Remember that unbelievable video of the golden eagle that tried to snatch a small child who was sitting in the park with his parents? Well, it’s so unbelievable because it never happened. This clip was actually staged by two students from a Canadian digital media school. The students were simply completing their assignment of creating a viral video— an assignment that would earn them a perfect score if their clip got 100,000 views. To date, the eagle video has nearly 43 million hits. Job well done fellas.

3 Crazy German Kid

This clip is pretty old, but once you take a look at it, you’ll quickly remember this lovable little guy. Yes, it’s the impossibly furious young German kid whose temper was apparently so out of control that his father set up a hidden camera to capture his insane behavior when his computer wouldn’t function properly. Too bad that was never the case though. It turns out that the boy has actually made quite a lot of videos, in all of which he plays some kind of weird, exaggerated character. His name is Leopold, and he duped us all.

2 Pig Rescues Goat

Not too long ago, a video that showed a drowning goat being pushed to safety by a small and impressively brave pig absolutely blew up. The clip was everywhere and was quickly crowned the cutest thing to happen in the history of the world; at least until it turned out to be shot by Comedy Central. Yes, the hero pig video was actually just a staged bit that was part of the show Nathan For You, in which Nathan Fielder tries to help struggling businesses. In this case, Nathan hoped to increase business at a local petting zoo by giving them a hero animal for tourists to flock to.

1 Twerking Girl Fail

Finally, it’s the most recent, and perhaps most heartbreaking fake video of them all. That clip where the girl turns upside down to twerk on a door, then falls backwards onto a coffee table and catches herself on fire; FAKE. It seemed from the beginning that this mishap was almost too perfect to have actually occurred, and it turns out it was. The girl featured in the video was actually a professional stuntwoman, and the clip cut out just before Jimmy Kimmel entered and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. It was actually nothing more than a joke PSA about the dangers of twerking that was put together for Jimmy’s late night show.
